Abstract

In order to mitigate the climate change is necessary to develop alternative sustainable sources of energy, namely, those that offer a significative reduction in emissions of greenhouse gases; biofuels in general are a viable and feasible alternative, mainly because they can be synthesized through ecofriendly processes while reducing the greenhouse gas emissions of their production as compared to fossil fuels. In this research, an experimental-exploratory protocol for the synthesis of biodiesel using as raw materials the used-cooking oil has been developed, this represents a double positive advantage since it avoids the contamination of soil and water, as well as the waste management related to collection and confinement (as well as associated costs) of used cooking oil, while revalorizing this waste into a valuable product. The obtained biodiesel has been physical-chemically characterized through standard ASTM methods applicable to fuels. Results indicate that obtained biodiesel and the mixture of biodiesel with fuels are a great alternative for the obtention of sustainable energy.
